Foods that you can eat without worrying about gaining weight are called negative calorie foods. These are everyday foods which are often covered with lots of extras like mayonnaise, sugar and sauces. And it’s these extras which cause the weight gain. So how can negative calorie foods help our weight loss plans and can you actually live on a negative calorie food diet?

Negative calorie basically means that you use more calories in eating and digesting the food than it is made up of, bearing in mind that we burn calories all of the time in our day to day lives, even when we are asleep. The term is also used for many very low calorie foods.

One of the most widely known negative calorie foods is celery. It is very low in calories and takes time and energy to eat, but only if you eat it whole and chew on all of the stringy fibres. If you ate celery like this all day you would not gain any weight, but it would not be good for you. You would not receive the nutritional requirements that you need and you might even starve. People who suffer with anorexia often will only eat negative calorie foods, which is a clear indication that it is not healthy to eat nothing but these types of foods.

These foods are good for snacks. Be sure to chew them thoroughly and do not make them into soup or juice to get the best effect for weight loss,. No calorie foods are best eaten raw, when ever possible. Be wary that some fruits are quite calorie-dense. Opt for fruits like apples, berries, pineapple and grapefruit which are all low calorie, high fibre foods.

Eating raw vegetables is more of a challenge but you can be grate or chop them up into smaller pieces. This list of low calorie vegetables shows which ones could be prepared for raw eating.

10 Negative Calorie Foods.

1. asparagus (you can break them into bite sized pieces and add to a salad).
2. broccoli (these can be mixed in a food processor with a few tomatoes and used as a dressing).
3. carrot (a great snack eaten whole or grated).
4. cauliflower (again, like broccoli, can be mixed with tomatoes for a dressing).
5. cabbage (used raw in coleslaw, but don’t add any mayonnaise!)
6. celery stalks (another excellent snack and remember to eat the stringy bits too).
7. cucumber (a tasty addition to any salad).
8. lettuce
9. spinach (good for mixing with tomato).
10. tomato (great for mixing with other veg on this list and easy to eat on its own).

A big salad made from five to seven of these ingredients would give you an excellent low calorie snack that would keep you eating and feeling full for a long time. You might also want to consider doing a detox on these foods for a few days but do discuss this with your doctor first.

You do need to be careful when eating a lot of negative calorie foods. Many foods contain substances that can be damaging if consumed in excess, such as the acid in pineapples and grapefruits. Others can cause allergies or diarrhoea if eaten in large quantities.
